Merienda - Filipiniečių Užkandžiai/ Filipino Snacks

Interview by Princess Benido (Borgas Talk/Cook Episode)

November 9, 2024 – Princess Benido Žalionienė is the proud owner of Obaa African Store located at Žemynos 18, Vilnius, Lithuania. She is selling a wide assortment of items from Ghana, such as beauty products, snacks, drinks, and fresh produce (root crops and vegetables). In addition to her business, she creates content – cooking videos showcasing her and interviews different people with different nationalities, who are living in Vilnius, Lithuania.

Her interviews are very fun and lively, and her guests also cook a simple meal that they share and eat together before the episode ends. Princess has interviewed immigrants from Ghana, India, Uganda, Kenya, Nigeria, Ukraine, Georgia, and the Philippines.

In this episode, in addition to sharing my views, my life and my past, I also got to share a Filipino dish. This Filipino dish is considered to be the Philippine’s National dish, being the first documented pre-colonial dish. When the Spaniards came to the Philippines, they noticed that the Filipinos were marinating their meat in vinegar (probably sugar cane vinegar) and salt. This preserved and tenderized the meat, thus, making it more flavorful. Overtime, the salt was replaced by soy sauce (from the Chinese), and thus, the makings of the basic Filipino adobo recipe. Being an advocate of Filipino food and culture in Lithuania, I was really very proud to feature this dish to the viewers and followers of Princess’ YouTube channel.
