Pastillas Workshop at IOM Lithuania, April 24, 2024
Merienda – Filipiniečių Užkandžiai/Filipino Snacks – A Taste of Filipino Flavors, coordinated with IOM Lithuania (International Organization for Migration) and offered a pastillas workshop on the 24th of April 2024, as one of the activities for the celebration of the Filipino Food Month 2024, aiming to promote Filipino food and flavors in Lithuania.
The workshop was held at the IOM Lithuania Office at J. Jasinskio 16, Vilnius, Lithuania. It started at 18:30 and ended before 21:00.
We planned to accommodate 15 participants during the workshop. Twenty-two (22) registered in total but 16 arrived and participated.
The first part of the workshop was a short introduction to inform the participants about the Filipino Food Month that we celebrate in the Philippines and in many other countries, such as in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, and many countries in Europe where there are plenty of Filipinos. Participants were also introduced to four (4) Filipino flavors – ube/purple yam, coconut-pandan, jackfruit, and Philippine mango. They tasted cooked ube halaya jam, coconut-pandan cookies, preserved and dried jackfruit and dried Philippine mangoes as well to familiarize themselves with the flavors that will be used during the workshop.
The second part of the workshop is the pastillas-making process. The participants were shown how to combine ingredients and how to apply flavoring on them. The flavoring used were from About Flavors, a company based in the Netherlands, owned and established by Filipino entrepreneurs as well.
Overall, the participants had a great time and expressed their appreciation for Filipino flavors and ingredients. Before the end of the workshop, the participants were invited to take home some brochures given by the Department of Tourism Philippines based in Frankfurt through the Philippine Embassy Poland.
